The role of communication in consolidating the rule of law
Institutions, public servants, senior officials and political leaders have an impact on the way the public space is shaped up and they act through the information and messages which they put out, Oana Marinescu, head of OMA Vision, said during a presentation at a high level seminar on strengthening democracy and rule of law in Eastern Europe, organized by IPALMO on July 13, 2011, in Bucharest. From her point of view, their responsibility is to preserve and contribute to a healthy space, in order to strengthen rule of law. The public space is a key element of a democratic society, being the virtual area where common people and social actors meet, discuss and negotiate their interests. The solution for a healthy public space is responsible public communication, meaning providing fair, transparent information, taking stances in the public arena which allow and encourage dialogue and debate, showing respect for difference, diversity and even opposed points of views. In a democratic society, where there is no legitimate monopoly on the public space, freedom of speech goes hand in hand with responsibility of speech, she stressed. The public space impacts the private space. For this reason, having a healthy public space is in the interest of everybody.
